Clinically proven to be more accurate and thorough than con- ventional 2-D mammography, 3-D mammography reduces callback rates by increasing the detection of breast cancer in its earliest stages— when it is the most treatable. “The 3-D mammograms provide more peace of mind to our patients,” says Krystel Schafer, mammography coordinator of Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center. “2-D mammograms only generate four images, but with 3-D imaging, they receive hun- dreds of images—providing greater confidence in the accuracy of their exams.” The 3-D machine captures 15 images that can be computer- generated into millimeter-thick increments of breast tissue. This process uses about the same amount of radiation as a conventional mammogram, and the exam takes the same amount of time—about 15 to 30 minutes. This technology also allows Samaritan to perform stereotactic biopsies on abnormalities—such as calcifications—that do not show up on ultrasound. Having the 90-minute biopsy performed in- house by familiar technologists and radiologists increases the patient’s comfort. Because 3-D mammograms have greater accuracy in detecting breast cancer in all types of breast tissue, every woman who comes to Samaritan for a mammogram will receive the 3-D mammogram. Schafer has seen an increased number of patients coming to Samaritan from other health care facilities and communities to receive a 3-D mammogram. “We are the only facility in Grant County, and within a 70-mile radius, to offer this full array of breast imag- ing services, from screening to diag- nosis,” says Schafer. “It is important to provide the very best technology for our patients in the fight against breast cancer. It has become our standard of care.” The 3-D difference 3-D imaging detects 41 percent more invasive cancers. Cancer is detected up to 15 months earlier than with 2-D mammography. Reduces the need for more scans by up to 40 percent, which reduces the emotional and financial burden of additional imaging. A higher standard for women’s health care 3-D mammography and stereotactic biopsy now available in Moses Lake Time for your mammogram? Call 793-9651 . 8 THE SAMARITAN Women’s health
