he Community Relations Committee, part of the Samaritan Health-
care Foundation, hosted “Winning the Food Fight” on May 4. It
wasn’t your typical food fight though—no food was thrown!
The premise of the event was to raise awareness for the Samari-
tan Foundation and increase friends of the Foundation. This event
included community partnerships with CB Tech and Michael’s on
the Lake. It proved to be a worthwhile endeavor.
The culinary class at CB Tech took on the challenge of modify-
ing recipes to be healthier. The students then provided samples of
their recipes to all attendees and demonstrated techniques during
the event. Michael’s on the Lake set up a table and provided tast-
ings of their new low-calorie mocktails—which they will soon be
launching at their restaurants. Another popular table was filled
with healthy alternative foods. Committee members explained
what the items were and where they could be purchased in Mo-
ses Lake.
Food brings people together
Not only did “Winning the Food
Fight” raise awareness for Samaritan’s Foundation, but it also
provided a new way for the community to get together and enjoy
healthy, tasty foods that they could also make at home for their
families. One of the goals of the event was to create recipes that
would bring family members with different dietary needs around
a table to eat together again.
Overall, this event was very successful, with approximately
85 people in attendance. Throughout the evening, door prizes were
given away. At the end of the night, everyone was given a booklet full
of the recipes sampled and a Samaritan Healthcare flexible cutting
board. The Community Relations Committee is already planning the
next event; it will focus on health-related dementia issues.
