Important safety update:

In effect July 11

S

amaritan has added new security measures to

help protect our tiniest patients.

It is important for mothers to have the sup-

port of family and friends during this exciting time.

The following guidelines are specifically designed

for the mother’s and baby’s well-being and safety dur-

ing their stay at Samaritan.

The Mother/Baby Unit is locked from the outside

24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Family and visitors can

request entrance by using the phone located at the

double-door entrance to the Mother/Baby Unit. A staff

member will grant access after the visitor provides

the name of the mother they plan to see.

These safety measures help us protect families

during their stay. We appreciate your patience and

cooperation in keeping our moms and babies safe.

ABOUT MELISSA FARRIS

New Mother/Baby Unit director

SAMAR I TAN HEALTHCARE ’ S

Mother/Baby Unit

would like to welcome Melissa Farris as its new director.

Farris says of herself, “I am coming to Samaritan from

PMH Medical Center in Prosser, where I worked for the

past 12 years. I spent my last eight years in nursing leader-

ship managing multiple nursing departments, infection

control and employee health.

“I originally started my nursing career in obstetrics

(OB), and although life has taken me in different direc-

tions, I have always wanted to return to OB, so I am very

excited about this opportunity.

“Living in Moses Lake is new to me,

but I am very familiar with the area, as I

grew up in Othello and still have a great

deal of family that lives here. In fact, my

son was actually born here at Samaritan

20 years ago. My husband, daughter and

I are very excited to be moving back to

be closer to our extended family and the

lakes where we spend most of our time

during the summer.

“During my spare time, I enjoy spending time with

my family on our boat with our three dogs (one Chi-

huahua and two St. Bernards), watching the Seahawks

and the Mariners, taking tropical vacations, and just

appreciating the countless days of sunshine that we are

lucky enough to have.

“I want to thank everyone for being so welcoming,

especially nursing leadership and the Mother/Baby Unit

staff. You’re all amazing and provide excellent care, and

I am lucky to be joining such an incredible team.”

WELCOME,

BABY GABRIEL

Mid-Columbia Dairy Women

donate gift to first June baby

JUNE HAPPENS

to be National Dairy Month. To cel-

ebrate the Mid-Columbia Dairy Women of Adams, Grant

and Franklin Counties donated a basket to the first June

baby born at Samaritan. Baby Gabriel was showered with

a cute basket of gifts fromMid-Columbia Dairy represen-

tatives Heather Zurcher, Tina Decker and Carla Sielaff.

The basket included clothes, books, diapers and a spe-

cial hand-knitted blanket. Items are donated by the Dairy

Women, who collect items throughout the year for this

special occasion. They do this not only as a celebration

but also because they truly enjoy it.

When asked, Zurcher said, “June is a special time for

us because it is National Dairy Month, so we want to do

something special to celebrate; what better way than to

celebrate the first birth in June?”

This is the fourth year that the women have donated a

basket to Samaritan’s first June baby. And they are already

looking forward to donating again in June 2017.

drive in the community.”

Youngren also attributed the excitement around the Foundation to the Community Relations Committee, which

has held three community events so far this year and is in final preparations for its October event—Breast Friends

Forever. The annual event will focus on women’s health and is set to be held at the Moses Lake Civic Center on

Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The free event hopes to inspire women to make breast health a priority

and showcase health care and cancer resources available close to home in our community.
